The WWF in Indonesia tries to prevent this from happening in Tanah Papua. This fantastic book describes in text, beautiful pictures and maps the choices that the organization has made and paints the picture of the dilemma’s they faced and how they coped with these problems. It makes the book not only interesting but also a pleasure to read. The book also gives an insight in the part the WWF plays en how they cope with the ups and downs during their work. Info wwf-indonesia@wwf.or.id or info@wwf.nl Text on the cover: Tanah Papua is a special place. Blessed with an exceptional natural and cultural diversity. Home of birds of paradise, rainbowfishes, monotremes, marsupials and placentals, and thousands of orchids. No less than 274 Papuan languages are spoken, reflecting the diversity of people. This book tells the story of the work of WWF Indonesia in this easternmost region of the country. It shows how conservation and development work commenced, and how it evolved over more than three decades. It gives insight in the choices that the organisation made, and how cooperations with partners were established. And above all, the dilemma’s the organisation experiences in a part of the world were ancient and traditional communities are faced with rapid changes in society and modern lifestyle. The future of Tanah Papua essentially depends on how its rich and natural resources will be protected and managed wisely. The people of Tanah Papua, recently arrived or present for millennia, will have to find a way how they can benefit from this exceptional richness while still leaving sufficient room for the unique flora and fauna. WWF in Tanah Papua is playing a crucial role in this process, in remote villages and in airconditioned boardrooms. It meets with community chiefs and company directors. Therefor the book gives this work a face, literally and it takes you on a journey from the lowlands to the highlands and to the open ocean.
